Walter (Richard Jenkins) has been stuck in the same routine for more than 20 years, teaching the same course, co-writing books on which he hasn't done half his work, having a private piano tutor and having trouble getting along with others. Life is dull as a stagnant pool. His life changed when his co-author Shelly, who was expecting a baby, was unable to attend an academic conference and Walter was there instead.Walter, who rarely goes to New York due to the death of his wife, suddenly finds two strangers in his home. After a misunderstanding, it became clear that the young couple had been tricked into renting the house. Walter told them to stay. Tarek was an enthusiastic young man from Syria who loved to play drums, and his girlfriend was a black woman from Senegal. Walter was impressed by Tarek's cheerfulness and learned to play drums from him. He also followed him to the park to participate in minority drumming practices.On this day, Walter and Tarek were rushing home after practice. When crossing the subway, Tarek missed the best opportunity to cross the barrier because he had to pass the drum. He was arrested and detained by the police after jumping from the barrier. Walter finds out that they are illegal immigrants, so he runs around hiring a lawyer for him. But when he gets nowhere, Mouna (Hiyam Abbas), Tarek's mother, comes to visit her because she is worried about her son. Walter appeases her anxious mood and takes her to New York for a walk. Walter took an extended leave of absence from school and decided to stay in New York to do what he thought was truly meaningful and worthwhile.
