After his son Daniel (Emilio Estevez) is killed in France, American doctor Tom (Martin Sheen) leaves for France to retrieve his son's body and belongings. Daniel died in the pyrenees, in a storm on his way to Santiago DE compostela church, and died peacefully. The road to the church is also known as the Way of st. James.At first, Tom's purpose was to retrieve Daniel's body, but after arriving in France, Tom decided to walk the road Daniel had already walked and not finished, in order to better understand his son's life, better understand their children. In the process of retracing the path of st. James, Tom meets three "hikers" from different countries who are looking for a more vital meaning and hope to find spiritual comfort in the secular world through walking.
