On the throne, Victoria (Emily Blunt), the young crown Prince, is angry that her mother, the Duchess of Kentien (Miranda Richardson), has been forced to sign a regency treaty for her personal adviser, Sir John Conroy (Mark Strong). This is when Victoria meets her cousin, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (Rupert Friend) for the first time. When Queen Victoria ascended the throne in 1836, she was assisted by the Viscount of Melbourne (Paul Bettany), but the government was in turmoil. A distraught Victoria wrote to Ask Prince Albert to come to Britain from Belgium, and the couple ended their marriage in 1840. After marriage, Albert finds that he is not fully accepted as a foreigner, and Victoria will use her royal authority in the quarrel, until an accidental assassination makes Victoria realize the significance of Albert in her life.
