The movie has a two-line structure, one telling the legendary romance between King Edward VIII (James D'Arcy) and an American woman, Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough). Edward, "not a man of love", has made love his name but has let Wallis take all the blame in her life. The other thread is that in 1998, a New York woman, Wally Wittrope (Abbie Cornish), is fascinated by the love story of Wallis and Edward while dealing with her husband's cold violence. She collects everything she can about Wallis and visits the Wallis Legacy Auction exhibit over and over again. And after many visits to the exhibit she meets the security guard there (Oscar Isaac), who makes her find a passion she hasn't seen in a long time.
