John Cash (Joaquin Phoenix) is a country boy from Arkansas, but his father (Robert Patrick) condemns and taunts him after his younger brother's death. His love of music led him to become famous as a country singer and a family of his own, but occasional encounters with drugs while on tour slowly took him away and led him into the abyss. When his wife, Vivian (Ginnifer Goodwin), leaves him with their children, he has to turn to Singer Joan Carter (Reese Witherspoon), who he has long loved for a long time, to help him recover from his addiction. And repeatedly rejected his advances. Cash was able to restart his career after recovering from drug addiction, and his love affair with Carter culminated on stage.
