During the First World War, Roy (Robert Taylor), an army lieutenant on holiday, meets dancer Mara (Vivien Leigh) on Waterloo Bridge and their love for each other quickly grows. Just as they decide to get married, Roy is called back to camp and they are forced to part ways. After missing a production of the company, Mara is dismissed from her job and is left to fend for herself with her best friend.Soon afterwards, Mara is devastated to learn that Roy has been killed in action. With the loss of her love, Mara feels that everything is lost and she and her best friend are forced to become prostitutes in order to survive. However, as fate would have it, it is at this point that Mara meets Roy again. Although she is thrilled that Roy is alive, Mara is in agony over her loss.
