The episodes are based on Yoshihiro Togashi's legendary manga, which was serialised in Weekly Shonen Jump for four consecutive years since 1990 and published by Jiyōsha. The story of the manga revolves around Yusuke Urayasu, who spends his days fighting and is killed in an accident while trying to protect a child. After his death, he can still see his own body lying on the ground. While he is in a daze, a woman named Mudan claims to be a spirit guide and comes to convey a shocking truth to him: the spirit world did not expect a delinquent like Yusuke Uraizumi to die because of his good deeds, and there is no place for him in heaven or hell. Thus, Yusuke is given the chance to be reborn and becomes a spirit world detective after passing the test. Since then, Yusuke is caught up in a mystery that concerns the earthly, demonic and spirit worlds.
