At the age of 66, Mr. Schmidt (Jack Nicholson) is retired and living at home, bored by his idle life. Still getting up at 7am every day, with only boring crossword puzzles and a boring wife to keep him company, Schmidt needed something to change his life, so he decided to sponsor ndugu, an orphan in Tanzania, and wrote his first letter to him. His wife's sudden death makes his life appear more cold, he ever began to miss that boring woman, but at this moment, he found his wife and another man's love letter in his wife's dressing room. Schmidt decided to travel alone by car, visiting many of the places he had lived and looking back. After kissing a married woman on impulse, he slowly forgave his wife. His daughter's marriage is worse than he imagined. The mediocre husband and the incredible family make him more worried about his daughter's future, but there is nothing he can do to change it. He never stopped writing to Ndugu during the trip, in which Schmidt described his life and perplexity in detail. When Schmidt returned home after attending his daughter's wedding, he received an unexpected reply from Ndugu. Looking at the simple words and the childlike pictures of Ndugu, Schmidt suddenly burst into tears.
