Outstanding student William (Patrick Fugit) secures the opportunity to write an interview for Rolling Stone magazine before he graduates. He is to follow the rock band's journey on a long trip and report. His mother, concerned about the bad style of the rock band, is adamantly opposed to William's decision.William stubbornly went on the road anyway. His interview was with the members of Stillwater, a group of young people who were not yet famous and had dreams of going to concerts all over the country. They have many of the qualities of other rockers: they are indulgent, shouting, unpredictable, and incite screaming from the crowd. At the same time, they can be addicted to drugs and have all the human weaknesses of selfishness and jealousy. There is a fan named Penny (Kate Hudson), who is with the band, but finally chooses to leave. William feels and participates in all of this with his heart, gaining valuable experience from it.
