In 19th century England, famous but little-known fossil hunter Mary Anning (Kate Winslet) works alone on the rugged southern coastline. After her famous fossil finds, she is now looking for common fossils to sell to tourists to support herself and her sick mother. When a wealthy guest (James McArdle) entrust Mary with the care of his wife, Charlotte Murchison (Saoirse Ronan), she can't turn down his offer. Mary, full of pride and enthusiasm for her work, initially clashes with her unwelcome guest, and despite the distance between their social class and personality, a strong bond begins to develop, forcing the two women to decide on the true nature of their relationship.
