Sade (Geoffrey Rush) is a French writer of the 19th century. He was a gifted writer who advocated freedom of expression, and his novels contained many erotic depictions. These works angered the French authorities, the government put him in an asylum, but the chains of tyranny only made Sade more determined to write, and works were born one by one in the asylum.The director of the asylum was an enlightened young priest. He also read Sade's novels and was full of admiration for Sade's talent and spirit. He provides Sade with generous living conditions, allowing him to concentrate on his writing, while allowing his laundress, Medlin (Kate Winslet), to help Sade by taking his work outside for publication. Medlin and Sade also have a secret love affair with each other.However, the powerful state apparatus sends Sade to the gallows. The government could not tolerate his "bad taste", but his work was passed on and opened the minds of the people.
