Jeff (Kurt Russell) and Amy (Kathleen Quinlan) are a married couple on a long road trip when the vehicle they are driving breaks down in the middle of nowhere. While the two are in a hurry, a strange man named Reed (J.T. Walsh) appears before them. Reed kindly tells Jeff and Amy that there is a place not too far away where they can call a tow truck, and Jeff edges Amy to follow Reed there, a bad decision that soon costs Jeff.While waiting for the tow truck, Jeff fixes his car himself, so he decides to drive to the same place Reed said he was looking for Reed and Amy. Unexpectedly, when Jeff arrived, no one in the area claimed to have seen Amy. Jeff finds Reed and confronts him about it, and Reed goes so far as to say that he doesn't know Jeff, let alone any Amy. Sensitive Jeff sensed that things are fraudulent, he wanted to turn to the police for help but did not have any evidence in hand, for a time, Jeff fell into a desperate situation.
