The story takes place in the 17th century in the American West, where Lizzy (Dakota Fanning), a mute woman, and her husband Eli (William Houston) live with their children. Despite their poverty and the fact that Lizzy was born with a disability, they are both content with their stable life.One day, a priest (Guy Pearce) arrives in town and from the first moment she meets him, Lizzy knows that her happy life will never be the same again.
