Walter Neff (Fred MacMurray) is a successful insurance agent who returns to the office at night and begins telling his story on a tape recorder...When Neff arrives at Mr. Dietrichson's home to secure an insurance proxy, he meets his new wife, Phyllis Dietrichson (Barbara Stanwyck). Beautiful Phyllis makes Neff feel uncomfortable, and she starts talking about all the bad things about her husband. On the second visit, Neff finally succumbs to her desire to join Phyllis in her husband's murder. Mr Neff plans to trick Mr Dietrichson into "double insurance" by making it look as if he has fallen while on a train. Mr. Dietrichson dies, and both Neff and Phyllis's love and money seem secure. However, Neff's best friend insurance investigator Barton Keyes (Edward G. Robinson) finds something fishy and starts investigating the whole thing...
