Luke leads a fraud syndicate in joliette, near Chicago. That day, the underling paid him a large sum of money which he had just cheated. Soon after, Luke was murdered. Originally, this money is Chicago gangland leader lonigan (Robert Shaw) just recovered gambling money, it is this money to make Luke burned.Hooker (Robert Redford) is one of Luke's men, and Luke, who treats him like his own son, wants to introduce him to his friend gundoff (Paul Newman), a Chicagoan con artist.
