Teresa (Robin Wright Penn) is divorced and her son is her prized possession. She is a columnist and works hard to give her son a good life. One day while running on the beach, she picks up a glass bottle that actually contains a letter. Teresa feels the heartache of the letter writer so deeply that by mistake the letter is published in the newspaper. The response from readers is overwhelming, and in an attempt to build on the success, the paper sends Teresa to find the owner of the letter.The man who wrote the letter is Gary (Kevin Costner), who has lived in a state of grief every day since the death of his wife Catherine, and uses the letter to express his love for her. Theresa still meets the grieving man and doesn't tell Gary that she has read the letters he wrote in a bottle.As the two spend time together, Teresa learns that she has fallen in love with her infatuated Gary, and Gary's life is much more vibrant because of Teresa's presence. How will Gary choose between his beloved wife, who has passed away, and Teresa, who is right in front of him...
