The story takes place in the 16th century. Danielle (Drew Barrymore) grew up with her father, but when he married her stepmother Romilla (Anjelica Huston), he soon died in an accident, leaving Danielle a Cinderella, but still strong and independent and loving. By chance, Danielle meets Prince Henri of France (Dougray Scott) and saves his life from a green thief. But when his stepmother learns of this, she is determined to get her eldest daughter Margaret (Megan Dodds) to marry the prince, lying that Danielle is only the family maid.
