The story comes from Peter's real-life experience: he escaped from his slave masters and endured the chase of cold-blooded hunters and the dangerous swamps of Louisiana, making his way north. And when he escaped to the Northern Army and was inspected, Peter revealed his back, scarred by the whipping of the plantation's overseers. This scene was captured in the famous photo "the scourged back," which appeared in the May 1863 issue of the Independent and the July 4 issue of Harper's Weekly that year. The photo became one of the proofs of the brutal atrocities of American slavery, which was published to promote the abolitionist movement and the enlistment of many free blacks in the Union Army, and spread around the world, with rumors that it caused countries such as France to refuse to buy cotton from the American South.
