The father (Tom Hanks) of Oscar shier (Thomas Horn), a 9-year-old boy who died in the September 11th accident, has left a shadow in his young heart. An envelope with "black" on it and a key were found by Oscar. Oscar thinks it's a clue his father left him. There must be a secret behind the key. Oscar tells the secret to his speechless grandfather (Max von Sydow). Each weekend after that, Oscar began looking for someone with the surname "black" in five urban areas. His father, along with Oscar, planned the scouting adventure for city six, telling Oscar: don't stop looking.
