The ten-year-old daughter of a black laborer, Carl (Samuel L. Jackson), was ravaged by two white men, and in those racially charged years, Carl didn't believe that the law could help him or his daughter get justice. So he tracked down the guys and shot them dead. After his revenge, Carl goes straight to the police station to turn himself in.A young lawyer, Jack (Matthew McConaughey), is assigned as Carl's defense attorney, and since Carl simply doesn't believe the law will be fair to black people, he and Jack don't see eye to eye. Sure enough, Carl receives an injustice in court. That's when law student Ellen (Sandra Bullock) shows up and takes Jack's side, deciding to plead not guilty for Carl.Despite the support Jack receives, his life is in great jeopardy: the local Ku Klux Klan blackmails Jack in every way possible, even threatening to blow up his house! Carl sees what Jack and the others are trying to do, and he decides to unite with the crowd and fight for justice.
