In a small town in Florida, Hillary Van Wetter (John Cusack) is accused of murdering a police officer and sentenced to death. Sensing that something is amiss and that Hillary may not really be the killer, Miami Times reporter Ward Jansen (Matthew McConaughey) and another reporter from London, Yardley Acheman (David Oyelowo), investigate the case.Ward's young brother Jack Jansen (Zac Efron), a retired swimmer, becomes their chauffeur.Charlotte Bless (Nicole Kidman), who likes to write letters to people in prison, this time falls in love with Hillary, and the two correspond frequently. So Ward and Yardley find Charlotte and ask her to assist in the investigation. Several people begin to visit Hillary in prison frequently, while at the same time, Jack, who is in his adolescence, develops a passionate love for the sexy and hot Charlotte.
