In the 1950s, Kansas had two big criminal gangs, an Italian and an African, and at one point the always hostile sides made a rare peace. To maintain their relationship, the leaders of the two gangs agreed to trade their younger sons.Rock plays Loy Cannon, the boss of an African-American gang who has to hand his son over to an enemy and raise him. But then the head of the Italian Mafia comes in for a routine operation and dies, and all hell breaks loose.The theme of the season has been described as "immigration, assimilation, and what we can do for money," and the intersection and conflict between two immigrant groups: Italians from Italy, African-americans fleeing the South to escape Jim Crow, and two gang members fighting for their own piece of the American dream.
