Sixteen-year-old black boy Jaime Wallace (Rob Brown) is extremely talented at basketball and has great potential to become the basketball star of tomorrow. He often plays basketball with his buddies, and they notice that the silent man who lives on the top floor of the apartment across the street is always watching them. The mysterious recluse turns out to be renowned author William Forrest (Sean Connery). A chance prank leads to the two men befriending each other, and William discovers that he also has a talent for writing. Soon, Jaime earns an invitation to a prestigious private school with his excellent basketball skills and great grades. However, Jaime is faced with difficult choices and skepticism about a white school. William agrees to help Jaime improve his writing. Gradually, the two men develop a deep friendship, and as William's gentle guidance sparks Jaime's hidden writing talent, William himself begins to change and finally emerges from the secluded apartment where he has been living for years.
