In Washington Heights, New York, Usnavi, a grocer who inherits his grandmother's fortune, is about to close his store and retire to his home in the Dominican Republic. But the appeal of the Hispanic community and its inhabitants makes him pause for thought. The film revolves around Usnavi, a college student, a taxi driver, a beauty salon worker and an elderly woman who yearns for a better life, as gentrification takes root and a power outage in the sweltering summer reaches an unprecedented level of personal crisis.
