Dan Dunn (Ryan Gosling) is a white history teacher whose students are mostly black at a rundown public high school in Brooklyn, New York. Dan was passionate and creative, loved his students, did not follow the official syllabus, believed in Hegelian dialectics, and believed that the nature of history was created by opposing forces. He brings to life the dry history on the pages, encourages his students to think and analyze history and how he works around the world, and the students become Dan's lifeline to society. At night, he was a hopeless drug addict.The split doesn't last long when Dan collapses in an empty girls' locker room and is discovered by his black female student, Deli (Shalica Epps). The dark secrets they keep together bring them closer and change their lives.
