Luke (Ryan Gosling), a mysterious biker, is unexpectedly reunited with his old flame, Romenia (Eva Mendes), at a carnival show. Desperate to get back together, Luke is shocked to find out that not only is she living with another man, but that she has a baby son with her. Luke, who had originally planned to leave, willingly stays in the town to take care of his son and Romilia. In order to make up for his son's guilt, Luke decides to rob a bank with a man from the town he met by chance. During his last operation, Luke is confronted by a young patrolman, Avery (Bradley Cooper). The young Avery has a loving wife and son who is also in infancy. Luke and Avery, two very different men who seem to have no connection to each other, but neither of them realize the inextricable bond that has developed between them as a result of the robbery.
