As summer vacation approaches, college freshman Lewis Thomas (Paul Walker) decides to travel across the country to New Jersey to visit the girl he's loved since high school, Verna Wilkos (Leelee Sobieski). To pass the boredom of the trip, he bails out his older brother Fuller (Steve Zahn), who is in jail for drink driving, and the two brothers make their way through. During the trip, Fuller buys a car radio and chats with the other drivers. During the trip they pick up a truck driver nicknamed "Rusty Nail", and Fuller gets the idea to encourage his brother to use the walkie-talkie to seduce Rusty Nail by posing as a woman. To them, it seemed like a harmless, quick-witted joke on the trip. Little did they know they were going to get into trouble with this difficult and scary guy. For the rest of their lives, Rusty Nail becomes a nightmare that Lewis, Fuller and Verna can hardly escape...
