Yorkshire, England, on the eve of World War II. The underclass in Europe suffered as a result of the turbulent times. Miner Sam (John Lynch) and his wife Sarah (Samantha Morton) have been living a very poor life. Sam, however, lost his only job as a breadwinner. Their son, Joe (Jonathan Mason), is beaten up by his teacher at school, and his only solace is his beloved friend, Lexi, a ram dog. To make a living however, Sam must sell Laixi to Duke of Lu Delin (Peter Aotu ).Joe was devastated by the loss of Lexie, and so was her mother, Sarah. And miss Joe's Lexi, also several times from the Duke stole to run out, but the faithful Sam a painful return it every time. At last, the Duke and his granddaughter were to return to live far away in Scotland, and Lacy was to be taken with them.
