In 1930s Franklin, the three Bondurant brothers, Forrest (Tom Hardy), Howard (Jason Clarke) and Jack (Shia LaBeouf), have a thriving bootlegging business and are well known in the area. Forrest's bar has a new waitress, Maggie Beauford (Jessica Chastain), and Jack is in love with a priest's daughter, Bertha Minnix (Mia Wasikowska). Jack is always working on something new with his best friend Cricket Pate (Dane DeHaan), but in the eyes of his two brothers he is always a kid who can't really get involved in their business. The new police officer, Charley Rakes (Guy Pearce), sees the three Bondurant brothers as very unpleasant and repeatedly stirs up trouble.
