In 1981, AIDS emerged in New York as an unprecedented immune system deficiency disease. It was also known as the "gay disease" at the time because it was concentrated among gay men. As Ned (Mark Ruffalo), a radical gay writer, watches his friends die and the government fail to act, he becomes outraged and launches the Gay Men's Health Crisis Group, calling on the government and the public to pay attention to the impending pandemic. Emma (Julia Roberts), a partially paralyzed female doctor, is one of the few health care workers who has been on high alert for the AIDS epidemic from the beginning and is an important heterosexual ally of Ned. During the campaign, Ned meets New York Times reporter Phoenix (Matthew Bomer) and the two fall in love. However, Phoenix is eventually diagnosed with the infection, and the grieving Ned is left to fight on both fronts: his lover and his career. The president of Health Crisis, Bruce (Taylor Kitsch), is Ned's best friend, but he is the opposite of the combative Ned.
