David (Mark Ruffalo), a single man, decides to rent out his flat in order to get over his heartbreak. Strange things begin to happen: a girl named Elizabeth (Reese Witherspoon) breaks into David's life, claiming that it is her house.Elizabeth seems to have superhuman powers, as she is able to appear at all times on the premises, pestering David to force him to move out. However, she is unaware of the harsh truth that lies behind this - Elizabeth is actually just a ghost. She was a workaholic in life and was killed in a car accident. David hires an exorcist and Elizabeth gradually learns her identity. In the process, a human-ghost love arises between David and Elizabeth, and a missed destiny between Elizabeth and David in her lifetime appears doubly saddening along with this fruitless love affair.
