Vera Phillips (Keira Knightley) and Caitlin Thomas (Sienna Miller) construct a deep friendship as they fall in love with the talented poet Dylan Thomas (Matthew Rhys). On the one hand, Vera is Thomas's childhood soulmate and first love, but eventually marries army officer William Crick (Cillian Murphy) due to Thomas's inability to be faithful. While William is away at war, he uses his military allowance to support Thomas's enormous lifestyle expenses. On the other hand, Catherine is the wife who is unfailingly devoted to Thomas, always deeply in love with him despite being tormented by his abusive love over and over again.
