William Henry Devereaux Jr. was a man who was reluctant about everything. This reluctance stems partly from his own personality, he was born an anarchist, and partly from the fact that he is in a department that is more divided than the Balkans. Over the course of a week, Devereaux will get his nose bruised by an angry colleague, imagine that his wife is having an affair with the college dean, wonder if a curvaceous part-time teacher is trying to seduce him with a peach kernel and threaten to execute a goose on local television. This process will see Devereaux come to terms with his flirtatious father, the reneging on his youthful promises, and the ominous malfunction of certain vital bodily functions.
