During an afternoon recording in Chicago in the 1920s, the atmosphere grows increasingly tense as the band members wait for trail-breaking performer, legendary "Mother of the Blues" Marla Rainey (Viola Davis). Late in the recording process, the fearless, hot-tempered Ma was engaged in a battle of wills over control of her music with her white manager and producer. Ambitionist trumpeter Levi (Chadwick Boseman) is obsessed with Ma's girlfriend and determined to make a dent in the music business, and while the band waits in the studio's claustrophobic rehearsal room, he pushes the musicians to break the revealing story that will change their lives forever.
