Troy (Denzel Washington) is a black American baseball hopeful who is imprisoned for an accidental robbery and murder at a time when Major League Baseball segregation had not yet been fully repealed and blacks had very few opportunities to play the field, and Troy is getting older when he gets out of prison, so his baseball career ends and he is reduced to working as a sanitation worker in Pittsburgh. The movie also follows Troy's complicated relationships with his wife, son and friends.
