Larry (Jason Robards) is a cranky old man who owns the 1,000-acre Iowa estate on which he has devoted his life, and on which he is king.Larry has three daughters; the eldest, Rose (Michelle Pfeiffer), lives on her father's farm with her husband and two daughters; Rose is suffering from breast cancer and is convinced she will recover. The second daughter, Ginny (Jessica Lange), also lives with her husband and does most of the work on the farm. The youngest daughter, Caroline (Jennifer Jason Leigh), is a lawyer. Conflicts erupt when Larry begins to think about issues regarding the inheritance of the farm. Many secrets that have been hidden in time for years gradually surface.
