Willie (Frankie Muniz) is the only child in his family. In those days, only children were rare and Willie was bullied and ostracized by his peers. Only Tinker (Luke Wilson), who lives next door, makes Willie feel happy and safe, and he even asks Tinker for advice on how to become a baseball pitcher. But it isn't long before this trusted friend leaves Willie to go to war. To comfort the sad Willie, his mother gives him a dog named Skip, who is smart and obedient, and with his help, Willie gradually opens his heart and has a group of friends.Dinky returns, but is charged with desertion. Willie invites Dinky to his rugby match, but the latter misses the appointment. The angry Willie takes his anger out on Skip, which directly leads to Skip's departure from home, and it is then that Willie realizes that Skip is so important to him that he is determined to find him and apologize to him.
