Patterson (Adam Driver) lives in Paterson, New Jersey, a man with the same name as his hometown, a bus driver who lives a humdrum cohabitation with his girlfriend Laura (Golshifteh Farahani) and a bulldog, driving the bus every day on the same route and repeating the ups and downs of life. Patterson loves to write poetry and carries a notebook with him to record the verses that pop into his head, but never thinks of publishing his verses in a book, his only reader being Laura.In contrast to Patterson, Laura is a born artist, with a variety of quirky ideas flashing in her head every day. She draws black and white totems on curtains, walls and even her own clothes, learns guitar, makes delicious cupcakes, and loves life with all her heart and soul. Finally, Patterson promises Laura to print her work in a book, will his life change as a result?
