Beverly and Violet (Meryl Streep) are an old married couple, one of them drinking and the other taking drugs to keep the relationship going. When Beverly leaves the house one morning and never returns, Violet has to call their three daughters, her cousin and her cousin's husband, to the house. Ivy, the second daughter, arrives, followed by Barbara (Julia Roberts), the eldest, and Bill (Ewan McGregor), her husband, who have come all the way from home with their 14-year-old daughter. Bad news follows when the police find Beverly's body in the lake and the cause of death is suicide. Karen, the youngest daughter, arrives at the funeral with her fiancé. At the dinner table after the funeral, an overdosed Violet starts to lose her temper, and the daughters, each with their own agenda, are on pins and needles. Barbara, the oldest daughter, can't stand her mother's meanness, and the two of them argue loudly. The family's hidden conflicts and those deliberately concealed truths are gradually revealed ......
