A stockbroker dies at his firm on his son's birthday as a result of a shooting incident. Two years later, the widow of the deceased sues the gun manufacturer Vicksburg for a large sum of money. Lowe (Dustin Hoffman), an attorney with more than thirty years of experience in the field, prefers to choose the jury members based on his personal experience, but accepts to work with Lawrence, a jury screening consultant, because such cases against gun companies are less successful and more unsuccessful. On the other hand, the gun company hires a well-known jury screening consultant, Rankin (Gene Hackman), to do a thorough background check on the jurors in order to take control of the jury.Young Nick (John Cusack) is selected to serve on the jury, but his intentions appear to be more than pure at first. Nick uses a variety of tactics to battle with Rankin's power within the jury, and Nick's partner Mary (Rachel Weisz) signals both Lowe and Rankin, promising them control of the jury if they pay for it. As Rankin battles with Nick, his men discover Nick's true intentions...
