The title 'stop-loss' was originally a common term in the financial foreign exchange field, which roughly refers to the act of trying to limit losses to a smaller range when an investment went wrong. The term was used by the U.S. government after the Vietnam War, and the "stop-loss procedure" refers to a procedure whereby the military forces, in an emergency determined by the MILITARY, force a soldier who has completed his or her duty or is conditionally retired to extend his or her service.
