When the nation was devastated by the death of Princess Diana in a car crash in 1997, the royal family took an evasive approach. This indifference has angered many British people. People's anti-royal sentiment is quite high, the emergency situation let the royal family into a serious crisis. However, Queen Elizabeth (Helen Mirren) does not come out to stabilize the public, but takes refuge with her family in a vacation palace. Tony Blair (Michael Sheen), the new prime minister, must find a balancing act to get the monarchy out of a crisis of confidence and establish her authority over the queen's relationship with the nation.
