Peggy (Moira Shearer) is a talented ballerina whose love for ballet makes her feel like she was born to dance. Her acting career took off when she took part in the ballet Red Shoes, in which she played the dancer who wears the red shoes and dances to death, to critical acclaim. She then meets composer Julien (Marius Goring) and falls in love. Peggy gave up her career for the people she loved, but the quiet life of married life was unbearable.
