Mark o 'brien (John Hawkes) suffered from polio as a child. Not only did he never get up again, but he also suffered from breathing difficulties. In his thirties he had become a successful poet and journalist, but as a man he had never tasted sex. After repeatedly seeking guidance from his pastor friends, he decided to hire professional practitioners to help him fulfill this desire. So shell (Helen Hunt) appeared in mark's life.
