The film is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi. Grace, a single mother (Mary-Louise Parker), with their twin sons Jared and Simon (Freddie Highmore) and their eldest daughter Marolly (Sarah Bolger) move into the ancestral home of Spitwick, and a series of strange things happen. Jared discovers the elf exploration guide of his great-aunt father Arthur Spitwick (David Strathairn) in the attic of the building during his own investigation. Despite a warning on the outside, Jared reads the guide and comes across one of the elves described in the book, Simbertek (Voiced by Martin Short), a brown elf. Simbertek warns Jared not to take the book outside the ancestral circle of Spectwick, lest morgrasse (Nick Nolte), the evil spirit, take the guide for himself and harm other elves. But Morgrasse's men had learned that the guide had been rediscovered and had taken Simon by mistake. To protect the guide and the family, the three siblings must fight to the death with Maugeras...
