The story takes place in early 20th century Australia and is set against the backdrop of early Australian settlers developing the outback. Father Ralph (Richard Chamberlain) is a friend of a New Zealand immigrant family, the Clearys, whose youngest daughter, Maggie (Rachel Ward), has been in love with him since she was a teenager, and the priest and Maggie fall in love, but can't stay together.
