The Great Race of Mercy focuses on the event in 1925 in which sled runners and dogs worked together to save the lives of children in Nome, Alaska, on a blood serum relay. The film will be streamed by Disney itself and will be released in 2019.At the end of 1924, a 2-year-old in Nome fell ill and was diagnosed with tonsillitis, a disease that is not usually life-threatening. However, this child became an exception. Many children were later diagnosed with tonsillitis. There was a vaccine that could be used against diphtheria, and then all the vaccines in Nome expired. The new vaccine did not arrive before the ports were closed. The Baltic would thaw in June the following year. The health Department decided to use two relays of sled dogs. Twenty sled riders and 150 dogs would have to travel day and night, across rivers, across plains, through forests and through the frozen Alaska Mail route. The nearest vaccine was in Nanna, 1085km from Naim, and it took them just five and a half days to complete the relay, which normally takes 25 days.
