Henri (Gene Hackman) is taken into custody by Sheriff Victor (Morgan Freeman) on suspicion of raping and killing an underage girl. Although Henri was initially identified as the person who reported the discovery of the girl's body, his grossly inconsistent testimony certainly adds weight to the scales of guilt tipped in his favour.Through the testimony of Henri's wife, Chartres (Monica Bellucci), Victor learns that the couple's relationship has long since died in name only, and that the culprit behind the situation is an unexplained affair between Henri and her young niece. After searching Henri's house, Detective Owens (Thomas Jane) finds a photograph of the murdered girl in a dark room, and all that is left to solve the case is Henri's final confession.
