Van Wilder (Ryan Reynolds) is in his seventh year at Coolidge College, where the king of repeaters is an active figure within the college, irregularly holding multiple roles as club president, campus sports promoter, and spiritual godfather of the basketball club's midcourt. Taj (Kal Penn), an exchange student from India, envies the life of an American student and defects to be Wilder's assistant. When Wilder's father, unable to cope with his son's lack of progress, cuts off his financial support, Wilder is forced to worry about his $20,000 tuition in installments. Gwen (Tara Reid), a reporter for the school magazine, takes an interest in Wilder, and stays close to him to write a story about him. Wilder, who is in dire straits, stumbles upon a request to help organize a prom for a fee, and has been working as a prom agent ever since to help subsidize his tuition, and Gwen's stories have made Wilder famous, and the two have grown close, which has stirred up the anger of Gwen's boyfriend. Gwen's boyfriend is outraged, and he plans to take revenge on Wilder...
