This HBO self-produced movie is another war-written film from "Hamburger Heights" director John Irving, set in World War II at the bloody Battle of Hogan's Woods. After an entire platoon is wiped out by the enemy, the only surviving private, David Manning (Ron Edel, "Comet Crash", "The Magnificent Four"), is promoted to sergeant. Unable to cope with the pressure of leading new recruits, Manning applies for discharge on the grounds of mental incapacity, but Manning's commanding officer (Martin Donovan, "Between Her and Him and Them") makes him an offer that he'll give Manning his discharge as long as he leads his men in the capture of a German post. He then submits Manning's application for discharge. But in the ruthlessness of war, it's not the victory that counts, it's surviving the battlefield. When it comes to World War II epics, "Saving Private Lane" and "Red Alert" may have stolen the show, but this film is a must-see and one of the best realistic films of the war!
